An already damp fall in Southern California could get a little wetter over the next few days as a modest Pacific storm moves slowly down the coast.

The National Weather Service said there could be scattered, off-and-on showers in the Los Angeles metropolitan area today through Sunday. It’s also possible that the whole system will head out to sea, skirting the Southland.

Forecasters put the chance of measurable rain in Los Angeles at about 30% today and Friday, increasing to about 40% Saturday and Sunday. Temperatures will fall as the weekend approaches, with snow in the local mountains at between 5,500 and 6,000 feet.

Last month was one of the wettest Octobers on record in Southern California. More than 4.5 inches of rain fell on downtown Los Angeles, the most since the 6.96 inches in October 1889.

Long-term forecasts call for normal to slightly below normal precipitation in California over the next month.
