Police Kill Suspect in Daniel Pearl’s Murder
An Islamic militant wanted in the murder of American journalist Daniel Pearl was killed in a shootout with Pakistani police who were trying to arrest him, officials said.
Asim Ghafoor was killed at a hide-out west of Karachi, said Javed Shah Bokhari, deputy inspector general of Karachi police. Ghafoor was wanted in the early 2002 kidnapping and killing of Pearl, a Wall Street Journal correspondent who grew up in Encino. Bokhari did not say what role Ghafoor might have played in Pearl’s slaying. Four others are appealing convictions in the case.
