Daschle Urges Common Ground in Farewell Talk
Democratic Sen. Tom Daschle of South Dakota urged often-warring colleagues to seek “common ground” as he gave an emotional farewell to Congress as the first Senate leader in half a century to be voted out of office.
In his remarks, Daschle, a senator for 18 years, said: “If I could leave this body with one wish, it would be that we never give up that search for common ground. The politics of common ground will not be found on the far right or the far left. That is not where most Americans live.”
Two of the Senate’s 51 Republicans were in the chamber from the start of the speech: Lamar Alexander of Tennessee and Peter Fitzgerald of Illinois.
