Bruins Back in Gear, 89-48

UCLA routed Gardner-Webb, 89-48, Sunday in the consolation game of the Miami Jam tournament at Coral Gables, Fla.

Gardner-Webb (0-2) scored the first field goal of the game and then never regained the lead. UCLA’s Noelle Quinn, who had suffered from dehydration in the Bruins’ opening loss to Texas Christian, scored 20 points on nine-for-12 shooting and had a game-high nine rebounds and six assists. Lisa Willis added 16 points and eight rebounds for UCLA (1-1).

No. 1 Tennessee 64, North Carolina State 54 -- Brittany Jackson made four free throws in the closing minutes to help lift the Lady Vols (2-0) at the Jimmy V Women’s Classic at Raleigh, N.C. The Wolfpack (1-1) had led by three at halftime and had been within four points with five minutes left.

North Carolina 71, No. 4 Connecticut 65 -- The Tar Heels (2-0) closed the game with a 16-5 run to upset the Huskies (1-1) at the Jimmy V Women’s Classic, pushing the three-time defending national champions to their earliest loss since 1995. Connecticut played without freshman point guard Ketia Swanier for most of the second half. She left with a concussion after being elbowed by a teammate.

No. 5 Georgia 78, No. 2 Texas 64 -- The Bulldogs (2-0) rallied from a 15-point second-half deficit to stun the Longhorns (1-1) at Athens, Ga. Georgia’s Tasha Humphrey, a 6-foot-2 freshman, scored 24 of her 27 points in the last half. She also had eight rebounds, two assists and a steal.

No. 7 Stanford 82, Pacific 26 -- The Cardinal (2-0), playing without senior guard Susan King Borchardt, who is out with a stress fracture in her left foot, beat the Tigers (1-1) at Santa Clara, Calif.

No. 19 Kansas State 85, Pepperdine 53 -- Kendra Wecker had 19 points to lead the Wildcats (2-0) at Manhattan, Kan. Jennifer Lacy’s 13 points led the Waves (0-2).

Villanova 73, No. 23 Penn State 65 -- The Wildcats (1-0) made nine of 20 three-point shots to defeat the Nittany Lions (0-3) at Radnor, Pa.
