After eight years in jail, ex-Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto’s husband was freed on $16,900 bail in a move the government called a step toward “harmony” with Bhutto’s political party.

Asif Ali Zardari, accused in a slew of cases alleging corruption during Bhutto’s two periods of rule in the 1990s, told reporters he was eager to unite political parties in Pakistan against President Pervez Musharraf.

Bhutto, who has lived in exile since fleeing Pakistan in 1999 to avoid arrest in her own corruption cases, expressed hope that she could be reunited with her husband outside Pakistan and that both could eventually return home.
