Poverty on the Rise, Government Says

More than one in five Israelis lived in poverty last year, and the gap between rich and poor has continued to widen, government statistics show.
The data, released by the National Insurance Institute, shows 1.4 million Israelis, or 22% of the population, lived below the poverty line in 2003. That compares with 20% in 2002.
The government defines the poverty line as less than $400 a month for an individual or $1,000 for a family of four.
