The United States closed its consular office and the American Center in India’s commercial hub of Bombay on Tuesday, saying they could be targets of terrorist attacks.

A U.S. Embassy official also warned Americans in India to be extra vigilant.

“Based on information received by the U.S. government, terrorists may be planning attacks on U.S. interests in the near future,” an embassy statement said.

U.S. citizens were asked to be alert when visiting clubs, restaurants, schools or hotels where foreigners congregate.

“We definitely do not want an incident in [Bombay] and have taken adequate security measures,” Joint Commissioner of Police Ahmad Javed said.

The embassy in New Delhi and other consular offices in the country will remain open, the U.S. said.
