An End Run on Intelligence Reform

Re “House Blocks Intelligence Reform Bill,” Nov. 21: Millions of people voted for George W. Bush in the last election because they placed concerns about homeland security over their misgivings with his domestic policies.

The killing of intelligence reform legislation by Republicans in the House is a betrayal of the trust these security voters put in the president. Though he pledged to put security first, this congressional rebuff shows that Bush is unwilling or unable to bring his party into line on this crucial issue.

It was no coincidence that Armed Services Committee Chairman Duncan Hunter (R-El Cajon) and House Judiciary Committee Chairman F. James Sensenbrenner Jr. (R-Wis.) waited until after the Nov. 2 election to block the intelligence reform bill.

I give them both credit for this maneuver. Had they been a little less brilliant or a little more honest with the voters, they would have signed their own political death warrants if they acted this way before the election.
