A Texas death row inmate injured a prison guard with a homemade spear in a possible botched attack on another condemned man, authorities said in Houston.

Pablo Melendez, a convicted murderer, hurled a 25-inch weapon, which consisted of a paper shaft and a one-inch head of sharpened metal, from his Polunsky Unit cell, the state prison system said.

The projectile struck guard Bradley Davison near the right temple, sliding two inches underneath his scalp but not penetrating his skull. He was treated and released from a hospital after receiving stitches.
