U.S. residents took Thanksgiving chicken to families who scavenge to survive at the La Espiga dump on the southern outskirts of San Salvador.

“We never imagined this,” said Jose Duran, feasting with his wife and two children. Like many others, the Durans live off what they can find to sell or use.

The families requested fast-food chicken instead of turkey. The trip was organized by a Salt Lake City group called Soles for Souls, which also collected shoes, clothing, toys and school supplies to hand out in the area.
