Envoys Brief Council on War Crimes in Sudan
From Times Wire Reports
U.N. envoys told the Security Council that war crimes had probably occurred on “a large and systematic scale” in Sudan’s Darfur region, and called for foreign police to help stop abuses.
Argentine Juan Mendez, the special U.N. advisor for the prevention of genocide, and Canadian Louise Arbour, the U.N. high commissioner for human rights, briefed the council on a just-completed trip to Sudan.
An estimated 50,000 people have died and more than 1 million have been uprooted from their homes in Darfur.
