The White House has released a copy of President Bush’s 1974 letter of resignation from the Air Reserves, which it said was found in Pentagon files.

The document, signed a year after Bush left the Texas Air National Guard, said he was leaving the military because of “inadequate time to fulfill possible future commitments.”

The letter, dated Nov. 8, 1974, bears Bush’s signature from Cambridge, Mass., where he was attending Harvard Business School.

The resignation came in a fill-in-the-blank letter that specifies that “I understand that, if this resignation is accepted, I will be honorably discharged from all appointments held by me.”

In releasing the document Wednesday night, the White House said it had been working with the Department of Defense to ensure that all of the president’s National Guard records were identified and released.
