Smoking sections may hurt landlords

Regarding “Renters Want Nonsmoking Sections” [Update, Sept. 12]: Creating nonsmoking sections in an apartment building would create an undue burden on the landlord.

Units could remain vacant in either section far longer than necessary, depriving a landlord of a fair return on his investment. The landlord may have a perfectly good rental in the “smoking section” available but would have to wait for weeks until a smoker comes along and rents that particular unit while nonsmokers are being turned away.

The L.A. housing market is tough enough; don’t add any more hurdles for the landlords who are still willing to operate.
