Album sales in the United States rose 5.8% in the first nine months of this year, reflecting a turnaround in music sales that began a year ago on the strength of hit releases and a growing market for digital tracks.

About 463 million albums were sold in the United States from January to Oct. 3, compared with roughly 437.4 million in 2003, according to Nielsen SoundScan.
