Stewart Alsop, a venture capitalist with New Enterprise Associates, said he planned to leave the largest U.S. venture capital firm at year’s end.

“I am going to see if I can design a working life for myself that is focused entirely on working with a few early-stage companies, whether that is in a smaller partnership or something more individualized,” Alsop, 52, wrote in an e-mail to the firm’s staff.

The e-mail was confirmed by New Enterprise Associates.

Alsop, who comes from a prominent political family, joined NEA in June 1996 as the Internet boom was getting under way.
