Sustainable housing plan
An environmental organization and a national affordable-housing provider have joined forces to build more than 8,500 environmentally friendly homes for low-income families across the country.
The Green Communities Initiative is a five-year, $550-million commitment by the Enterprise Foundation/Enterprise Social Investment Corp. and Natural Resources Defense Council to build affordable rental and for-sale housing that conserves energy and natural resources.
The partners will provide training and technical assistance to help interested developers meet green standards. The initiative also will encourage government agencies to dedicate federal housing tax credits to developments that include green building methods.
