Suicide Bomber Kills Guards, Passerby at a Pakistan Mosque
A suicide bombing at a Shiite Muslim mosque Sunday in the eastern Pakistani city of Lahore killed four people -- the bomber, two security guards who confronted him and a passerby. The guards were credited with preventing far more deaths.
Up to 80 people were in the mosque when a man carrying a briefcase tried to enter Husainia Hall but was blocked by the security guards, officials said. A bomb in the briefcase exploded after a scuffle, during which one of the guards opened fire.
Punjab province Law Minister Raja Basharat Illahi said eight people were wounded. There was no immediate claim of responsibility.
The incident was this month’s third attack on a religious site in Punjab, an apparent sign of rising strife between Shiite and Sunni Muslims.
