Shortage of campus units

A study by the National Multi-Housing Council, a trade group for larger apartment-rental companies, says there may yet be one overlooked nugget of investment gold for landlords: campus housing.

The council’s study looked at 64 college towns across the country and found significant rental shortages in 27 of them.

At least two factors are contributing to the crunch, the group said.

One, enrollment is surging as the number of high school graduates approaches record levels. And two, apartment housing, like America’s single-family housing, is starting to show its age. In many cities, the average campus-area apartment was built in the 1960s or ‘70s.
