Debating the Need for the Electoral College

Share

In “The Electoral College Should Be Abolished” (letters, Oct. 18), three letter writers advocated just that. They don’t seem to understand that the voters of just 20 states could decide an election. That is what the founders of this country took into consideration when they came up with the electoral college in the first place. Just because a voter lives in California, his/her vote should not count more than the vote of a person from Vermont, Wyoming or Delaware.

The biggest insult to any voter in the U.S. is the electoral college. We may live in a democracy, but when it comes to electing a person to fill the highest office in our land we are not entitled to “one man, one vote.” By its very nature the electoral college is a manipulation of the popular vote. Until the electoral college is abolished, how can one trust our election process regarding the most powerful position in the world?
