Lawmakers Reject Death Penalty in Close Vote

Polish lawmakers have narrowly voted against reintroducing the death penalty, seven years after the country abolished it to meet European Union human rights standards.
The move to reinstate capital punishment followed a series of killings that outraged the nation, including the case of a young woman who was tortured and killed on a train, her body then dumped out a window.
Parliament’s lower house rejected it Friday, 198-194 with 14 abstentions.
