The Defense Department last week identified the following American military personnel killed in Afghanistan and Iraq:

William M. Amundson Jr., 21, of The Woodlands, Texas; corporal, Army. Amundson was killed Tuesday when the vehicle he was in overturned in eastern Afghanistan. He was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment at Ft. Benning, Ga.

Mark A. Barbret, 22, of Shelby Township, Mich.; private first class, Army. Barbret was among three soldiers killed Oct. 14 when a homemade bomb detonated near their convoy in Ramadi, Iraq. He was assigned to the 44th Engineer Battalion at Camp Howze, Korea.

Douglas E. Bascom, 25, of Colorado Springs, Colo.; sergeant, Marine Corps. Bascom was killed Wednesday in enemy action in Iraq’s Al Anbar province. A member of the Individual Ready Reserve, he was mobilized and assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, 1st Marine Expeditionary Force at Camp Pendleton.

Bradley S. Beard, 22, of Chapel Hill, N.C.; specialist, Army. Beard was among three soldiers killed Oct. 14 when a homemade bomb detonated near their convoy in Ramadi, Iraq. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 17th Field Artillery Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division at Camp Red Cloud, Korea.

William I. Brennan, 36, of Bethlehem, Conn.; chief warrant officer, Army. Brennan was one of two soldiers killed Oct. 16 when their helicopter apparently collided with another helicopter and crashed in Baghdad. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 25th Aviation, 25th Infantry Division at Wheeler Army Air Field, Hawaii.

Alan J. Burgess, 24, of Landaff, N.H.; specialist, Army National Guard. Burgess was killed Oct. 15 when a car bomb exploded near his patrol vehicle in Mosul, Iraq. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 197th Field Artillery Brigade, Army National Guard in Woodsville, N.H.

Andrew C. Ehrlich, 21, of Mesa, Ariz.; specialist, Army. Ehrlich died Monday of noncombat-related injuries in Muqdadiyah, Iraq. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 2nd Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division in Vilseck, Germany.

Omer T. Hawkins II, 31, of Cherry Fork, Ohio; staff sergeant, Army. Hawkins was among three soldiers killed Oct. 14 when a homemade bomb detonated near their convoy in Ramadi, Iraq. He was assigned to the 44th Engineer Battalion at Camp Howze, Korea.

Christopher B. Johnson, 29, of Excelsior Springs, Mo.; captain, Army. Johnson was one of two soldiers killed Oct. 16 when their helicopter apparently collided with another helicopter and crashed in Baghdad. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 25th Aviation, 25th Infantry Division at Wheeler Army Air Field, Hawaii.

Jaime Moreno, 28, of Round Lake Beach, Ill.; specialist, Army. Moreno died Oct. 13 in Baghdad of injuries suffered Oct. 12 when a homemade bomb detonated near his patrol vehicle, killing two other soldiers. He was assigned to the 20th Engineer Battalion, 1st Cavalry Division at Ft. Hood, Texas.

Michael G. Owen, 31, of Phoenix; sergeant, Army. Owen was one of two soldiers and a Marine killed Oct. 15 when a car bomb exploded near their vehicle in Karabilah, Iraq. He was assigned to the 9th Psychological Operations Battalion, 4th Psychological Operations Group (Airborne) at Ft. Bragg, N.C.

Mark P. Phelan, 44, of Green Lane, Pa.; lieutenant colonel, Army Reserve. Phelan was one of two soldiers killed Oct. 13 when a homemade bomb detonated near their convoy vehicle in Mosul, Iraq. He was assigned to the 416th Civil Affairs Battalion, Army Reserve in Morristown, Pa.

Dennis L. Pintor, 30, of Lima, Ohio; captain, Army. Pintor was one of three soldiers killed Oct. 12 when a homemade bomb detonated near their patrol vehicle in Baghdad. He was assigned to the 20th Engineer Battalion, 1st Cavalry Division at Ft. Hood, Texas.

Jesse M. Samek, 21, of Rogers, Ark.; airman first class, Air Force. Samek died Thursday of injuries he suffered Wednesday when a helicopter crashed during a medical evacuation mission in western Afghanistan. He was assigned to the 66th Rescue Squadron at Nellis Air Force Base, Nev.

Jonathan J. Santos, 22, of Whatcom County, Wash.; specialist, Army. Santos was one of two soldiers and a Marine killed Oct. 15 when a car bomb exploded near their vehicle in Karabilah, Iraq. He was assigned to the 9th Psychological Operations Battalion, 4th Psychological Operations Group (Airborne) at Ft. Bragg, N.C.

Josiah H. Vandertulip, 21, of Irving, Texas; specialist, Army. Vandertulip was killed Oct. 14 when his dismounted patrol came under enemy fire in Baghdad. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 7th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division at Ft. Hood, Texas.

Michael S. Weger, 30, of Rochester, N.Y.; specialist, Army. Weger was one of three soldiers killed Oct. 12 when a homemade bomb detonated near their patrol vehicle in Baghdad. He was assigned to the 20th Engineer Battalion, 1st Cavalry Division at Ft. Hood, Texas.
