From Times Staff and Wire Reports

About 1,500 students who were told they would have to attend community college before enrolling at the University of California have accepted the university system’s belated offer to attend as freshmen, UC officials said Friday.

The new policy affects about 20% of the nearly 7,800 students initially offered the transfer option, which aimed to save state funds by reducing enrollment.

After legislators objected to the program, the final state budget included $12 million to allow the students, all of whom met UC’s eligibility standards, to enroll directly at a university this year.

About 300 others chose to remain in the program and enroll at UC campuses after two years.
