No. 15 Clemson Outlasts Wake Forest in Overtime

Charlie Whitehurst threw an 11-yard touchdown pass to Kyle Browning in the second overtime to lift Clemson to a 37-30 victory over Wake Forest in an Atlantic Coast Conference game at Clemson, S.C.

The Tigers led, 19-3, early in the second quarter, but the Demon Deacons rallied for 24 straight points and led, 27-19, after Chris Barclay’s 50-yard touchdown run with 12:20 left.

Yusef Kelly’s short touchdown run and Kelvin Grant’s tying two-point conversion catch with 1:52 left in the regulation tied it at 27-27 for Clemson.

No. 16 Virginia 44, Temple 14 -- Wali Lundy ran for 104 yards and three touchdowns, and Alvin Pearman returned a punt 70 yards for a score to lead the Cavaliers over the Owls in the season opener for both teams at Philadelphia.

No. 22 Maryland 23, Northern Illinois 20 -- Nick Novak became the leading scorer in ACC history, kicking three field goals and two conversions to lead the Terrapins over the Huskies at College Park, Md.

North Carolina State 42, Richmond 0 -- Jay Davis threw two touchdown passes in his first chance as Philip Rivers’ replacement, leading the Wolf Pack over the Division I-AA Spiders at Raleigh, N.C.

Outside the stadium, there was a deadly shooting in a nearby parking lot.

One person died at the scene and another died at the hospital, said Wake County Sheriff Donnie Harrison. No one else was injured in the incident on the north side of Carter-Finley Stadium.

Georgia Tech 28, Samford 7 -- P.J. Daniels rushed for 169 yards and two touchdowns and Reggie Ball passed for two touchdowns to lead the Yellow Jackets (1-0) over the Division I-AA Bulldogs (1-1) at Atlanta.

North Carolina 49, William & Mary 38 -- Ronnie McGill rushed for three fourth-quarter touchdowns and the Tar Heels rallied from a 10-point third-quarter deficit to defeat the Tribe, a Division I-AA team, at Chapel Hill, N.C.

Navy 27, Duke 12 -- Quarterback Aaron Polanco threw a touchdown pass, ran for another score and finished with 259 yards of total offense to help the Midshipmen defeat the Blue Devils at Annapolis, Md.
