Supah Blitz Has a Chance

Share

For most of his career, Supah Blitz has been content to settle for minor prizes.

In 29 starts, the 4-year-old Mecke colt has won four times but has finished second or third 16 times. Twelve times he has completed the exacta.

Now that he has changed barns, Supah Blitz might be able to get his first win of 2004.

Purchased privately by a partnership last month, Supah Blitz will make his first start for trainer Doug O’Neill in today’s $250,000 Del Mar Breeders’ Cup Handicap.

A Grade II at one mile, the race also attracted Night Patrol, Rushin’ To Altar, Touch The Wire, Snorter, During and Domestic Dispute.

Owned by Jim McIngvale and trained by Bob Baffert, During is the probable favorite. A five-time winner in 2003, the 4-year-old Cherokee Run colt is only one for five this year but has been in some tough spots, including the $1-million Pacific Classic on Aug. 22, where he finished fifth.

Domestic Dispute will also take his share of money, but he’s hard to take because he doesn’t win often. The Unbridled’s Song colt is two for 12 since the beginning of last year and has finished off the board in eight of those races.

Race of the day: Film Maker, who has won five of 12 on the turf, is among eight fillies and mares scheduled to go 1 3/8 miles in the second division of the $100,000 Glens Falls Handicap at Saratoga. The first division lured nine runners.

One for the road: Greatdayinthelake can get his maiden broken with a clean trip in today’s sixth at Bay Meadows. The 2-year-old Salt Lake colt switches to jockey Chance Rollins in the $26,500 maiden contest at six furlongs.

Exotically speaking: A pick three using Silver Dawn in the sixth, True Dancer, Dell Place and Sea Harbor in the seventh and Supah Blitz and During in the eighth.

Winners: Previous day/meet total: 5/106. Money: Previous day/meet total: $32.80/$588. Total money bet: $682.
