76 Killed as Torrential Floods Hit Southwest
From Times Wire Reports
Torrential floods in southwest China have claimed at least 76 lives, prompting the beleaguered local government to seek help from the military to rescue hundreds of people trapped by mudslides and washed-out roads, state media reported.
Days of heavy rain in Sichuan and Chongqing -- regions prone to seasonal flooding -- have swamped entire villages and ruined huge swathes of farmland, the New China News Agency said, and forecasts call for more rain. More than 50 people are missing.
