Schilling Gets His 19th Win at Seattle

Curt Schilling became the first 19-game winner in the major leagues this season and Manny Ramirez homered twice, including his second grand slam of the season, to lead the Boston Red Sox over the Seattle Mariners, 13-2, Friday night at Seattle.

David Ortiz hit a go-ahead homer during a five-run sixth inning, and Johnny Damon had three RBIs for the Red Sox, who cut the New York Yankees’ East Division lead to 2 1/2 games.

Ramirez tied Ted Williams and Jimmie Foxx for fifth on the career grand slam list at 17, passing Hank Aaron and Babe Ruth. The only players ahead of Ramirez are Lou Gehrig (23), Eddie Murray (19), and Willie McCovey and Robin Ventura (18 each).

Schilling (19-6) won his sixth consecutive start. He gave up two runs and four hits in seven innings and walked none.Seattle’s Ichiro Suzuki went 0 for 4, ending his 14-game hitting streak. He has 229 hits, 28 shy of the major league record set by George Sisler in 1920.

Cleveland 4, Oakland 3 -- Casey Blake’s 12th-inning home run at Oakland sent the Athletics to their fifth loss in a row. Coco Crisp tied the score at 3-3 with a home run in the eighth inning off Mark Mulder.

After the A’s couldn’t score with the bases loaded and one out in the 11th, Blake -- hitless in his first five at-bats -- hit his 26th homer off rookie Justin Duchscherer (5-6).

Minnesota 4, Detroit 1 -- Carlos Silva won for the first time in more than a month, and Jacque Jones drove in two runs at Detroit.

Silva (11-8) gave up one run and nine hits in six innings, struck out six and walked none for his first victory in seven starts since Aug. 3 against the Angels.

J.C. Romero pitched the seventh to extend his scoreless streak to 35 2/3 innings. Joe Nathan finished for his 40th save.

Texas 10, Toronto 3 -- Ryan Drese pitched seven strong innings, and Kevin Mench homered twice to lead the Rangers at Arlington, Texas.

Drese (12-8) yielded one run and six hits, struck out seven and walked one. He lost a bid for his first shutout when Carlos Delgado hit a bases-empty homer in the seventh.

Mench has homered in his last three games and has four in 10 at-bats. He and Mark Teixeira homered during a six-run fourth inning for the Rangers, who had lost nine of 11.

Baltimore 14, New York 8 -- Brian Roberts and Larry Bigbie had two hits apiece in an eight-run third inning at Baltimore, and the Orioles ended the Yankees’ five-game winning streak.

Baltimore trailed, 3-2, before sending 13 batters to the plate in the third against Javier Vazquez (13-9) and two relievers. Bigbie had two singles and scored twice, and Roberts had a bunt single and a two-run double.

Kansas City 8, Tampa Bay 5 -- The Royals scored six runs in the seventh inning at Kansas City, Mo., to send the Devil Rays to their 12th consecutive loss. Tampa Bay, on the second-longest skid in team history, led 5-0 in the sixth.
