Ed Hinkel made a diving, fingertip catch for a touchdown and No. 16 Iowa stiffened on defense when it needed to most Saturday to defeat Iowa State, 17-10, at Iowa City.

Iowa (2-0) forced Iowa State to kick field goals four times after the Cyclones had driven deep into Hawkeye territory. But Brian Jansen, a freshman walk-on, missed three of those kicks and Iowa held on for its second consecutive victory over the Cyclones after losing five in a row.

Iowa State (1-1) had gained the momentum after Todd Blythe leaped between two defenders to catch a 40-yard touchdown pass from Austin Flynn, cutting the lead to seven with 36 seconds left in the third quarter.

The Cyclones then threw Iowa for 17 yards in losses on three plays and got the ball back at the Hawkeyes’ 33.

Flynn, the No. 2 quarterback, drove Iowa State to the 16 but gained only three yards on a quarterback draw on third and seven.

That brought in Jansen, whose 31-yard kick hooked wide left with 9:47 remaining.

Jansen, playing because regular kicker Tony Yelk has a pulled muscle, missed earlier from 30 and 45 yards and made a 41-yarder.

Iowa State threatened again after Jansen’s final miss, getting to the Iowa 35. But on fourth down, Abdul Hodge and Tyler Luebke dropped quarterback Bret Meyer two yards short of a first down with 1:09 remaining.

Iowa managed only 85 yards rushing behind its rebuilt offensive line and had to rely on Drew Tate’s passing.

No. 21 Wisconsin 18, Nevada Las Vegas 3 -- Jim Leonhard returned a blocked field goal 86 yards for a score and the Badgers used two safeties to hold off the Rebels at Madison, Wis.

The Badgers (2-0) hadn’t recorded two safeties in a game since 1951 and they’re the first Big Ten team to do it in 23 years, since Minnesota had two at Indiana in 1981. The first came on a high snap out of the end zone on a punt by Nevada Las Vegas (0-2) and the second on linebacker Mark Zalewski’s sack in the end zone.

No. 22 Minnesota 37, Illinois State 21 -- Marion Barber III and Laurence Maroney each surpassed 100 yards rushing for the fifth time in 15 games together, and the Golden Gophers (2-0) scored an unimpressive victory over the Division I-AA Redbirds (1-1) at Minneapolis.

No. 25 Purdue 59, Ball State 7 -- Kyle Orton threw for a career-high five touchdowns and ran for another to lead the Boilermakers (2-0) past the Cardinals (0-2) at West Lafayette, Ind.

Orton completed his first 15 passes and threw for 329 yards in just over two quarters. He completed 23 of 26 overall -- a school-record 88.5%.

In two games, Purdue has racked up 1,170 yards of offense and outscored its opponents, 110-7, including last week’s 51-0 rout of Syracuse.

Michigan State 24, Central Michigan 7 -- The Spartans’ Stephen Reaves completed nine of 19 passes for 183 yards and a touchdown and backup Drew Stanton ran 38 yards for a late score as the Spartans (1-1) rebounded from an opening loss at Rutgers to defeat the Chippewas (0-2) at East Lansing, Mich.
