Matt LoVecchio threw for a touchdown and BenJarvus Green-Ellis ran for 91 yards and another score, to lead Indiana to a 30-24 upset of No. 24 Oregon on Saturday at Eugene, Ore., and its first 2-0 start since 1996.

The Hoosiers, who won only two games last season, opened with a 41-10 rout of Central Michigan.

Indiana had not defeated a ranked opponent on the road since Nov. 10, 2001, when it defeated No. 23 Michigan State.

The Ducks, who started the season with a bye, broke a string of 21 consecutive nonconference victories at Autzen Stadium dating to Sept. 17, 1994, when they lost to Utah.

Oregon had 317 yards passing and outgained Indiana, 178-127, in rushing yards but couldn’t capitalize on the Hoosiers’ second-half mistakes.

Oregon came within six points at 30-24 with 8 minutes 38 seconds left on Dante Rosario’s seven-yard touchdown catch from Kellen Clemens.

On the next series, Indiana punter Tyson Beattie, on fourth and 12, put his knee down while fielding a low snap for a loss of 14 yards. Oregon got the ball on the Indiana 44, but the drive stalled at the 18 and Jared Siegel’s field-goal attempt went wide right.

Oregon had another chance when Robby Valenzuela recovered Ymar Washington’s fumble on the Indiana 27, but a play later Clemens had a pass intercepted by Herana-Daze Jones.

Clemens threw an interception on the Ducks’ next series.

No. 12 California 41, New Mexico State 14 -- J.J. Arrington ran for 177 yards and three touchdowns, and Aaron Rodgers completed 20 of 26 passes for 266 yards and two scores to lead the Golden Bears (2-0) over the Aggies (0-2) at Berkeley.

Chase Lyman made four receptions for 111 yards with a touchdown and a two-point conversion for Cal, which played its only home game at Memorial Stadium until they play host to UCLA on Oct. 16.

Arrington has six rushing touchdowns in two games this season, including a 69-yard burst midway through the third quarter.

Rodgers passed to Lyman for 37 yards in the second quarter to set up Arrington’s second touchdown, a 12-yard run 4:52 before halftime. Arrington also scored on a two-yard run on Cal’s first offensive series of the game.

No. 17 Utah 23, Arizona 6 -- Alex Smith passed for two touchdowns, and the Utes (2-0) held the Wildcats (0-2) without a touchdown at Tucson.

Utah, seeking to defend its highest ranking since finishing the 1993 season at No. 8, flashed its offensive strength early, then held on with a defensive effort that included three fumble recoveries, a goal-line stand and an interception that set up a touchdown.

Marty Johnson, who ran for 105 yards in 18 attempts, scored from 20 yards to help the Utes end a seven-game losing streak in Tucson that dated to the 1969 season.

Colorado 20, Washington State 12 -- Lawrence Vickers recovered a blocked punt in the end zone, Joe Sanders returned an interception for a score and the Buffaloes (2-0) made a late goal-line stand for a second straight week to defeat the Cougars (1-1) at Seattle.

Washington State gained 416 yards to 117 for Colorado, but the Cougars couldn’t overcome a handful of special-teams blunders.

Sanders stepped in front of a pass by reserve quarterback Alex Brink -- sophomore starter Josh Swogger was benched after completing only six of 27 passes for 77 yards -- and returned it 51 yards to put the Buffaloes ahead, 17-6, with 9:13 to play.

Stanford 37, Brigham Young 10 -- Trent Edwards passed for a career-high 297 yards and three touchdowns, and T.J. Rushing returned a kickoff 99 yards for a score to lead the Cardinal (2-0) over the Cougars (1-1) at Stanford.

Alex Smith, Justin McCullum and Evan Moore caught scoring passes from Edwards, who completed 20 of 41 passes.

Arizona State 30, Northwestern 21 -- Andrew Walter threw for 292 yards and three touchdowns and the Sun Devils (2-0) held the Wildcat tandem of quarterback Brett Basanez and receiver Jonathan Fields in check to win at Evanston, Ill. Northwestern is 0-2.
