An Ulterior Motive for Grocers’ Demands?

Share

It seems from reading “Safeway Sees Gains in Labor Pact” (Sept. 9) that the 4 1/2 -month supermarket strike in Southern and Central California was actually so the companies could free up capital and to expand and remodel.

And all along the companies kept telling the public that to survive against Wal-Mart’s low prices, they needed a lower wage structure.

How does expanding and remodeling reduce the customer cost of groceries?

I look for some nice bonuses for the companies’ CEOs as they get their hands on that freed-up capital.
