A leader of Taiwan’s opposition Nationalists has met with China’s No. 4 Communist in a reconciliation between the factions, whose civil war split their country in 1949.

The Taiwanese government denounced the meeting.

Jia Qinglin, a member of the Communist Party’s ruling Standing Committee, extended a “warm welcome” to Chiang Pin-kung, vice chairman of the Nationalist Party, which ruled China before fleeing to the island of Taiwan.
