Judging the Career of Johnnie Cochran

Share

Re “An A-List Turnout Does Cochran Justice,” April 7: I was subpoenaed to testify in the O.J. Simpson case. It concerned an appearance by Simpson on a television show I produced. It was an insignificant matter, and I didn’t think I was headed for instant fame in this gigantic trial. But I showed up and was searched, fingerprinted and told to wait in the corridor.

Legal aides and handlers were everywhere, but just then Johnnie Cochran showed up. He came over to me, introduced himself (really!) and told me he didn’t think I would be needed. In thanking me for being there anyway, he treated me as if I was the most important witness that day.

He was the celebrity, but he made me feel like one.

Although Cochran may have been the nicest person on Earth, after the O.J. Simpson trial, he became, for many of us, a symbol of everything that is wrong with the criminal justice system -- get your client off at all costs.

Help me out here. As a liberal, am I expected to revere Cochran? And is this reverence supposed to be based on his sleazy, theatrical and racist defense of a rich murderer?
