Racquetball comes back swinging strong

Share

Racquetball, whose popularity waned during the last decade, is enjoying a bit of a resurgence as fitness enthusiasts look for an intense, all-body workout that keeps them crouched, reaching and running. It doesn’t hurt that a vigorous game can burn off 800 calories in an hour. The fast-paced sport has become even faster with the advent of high-tech racquets -- virtual cannons made with carbon materials and innovative string patterns.

Hardest hitter

E Force Radium 170G: Longer strings for more power.

Likes: Slightly faster ball speed due to unusual design and eight extra-long (22-inch) vertical strings.

Dislikes: No shoulder strap on the zippered racquet cover.

Price: $225. (800) 433-6723; www.e-force.com.

String power

Wilson nPower: Stiff racquet with extra-long strings.

Likes: Very good power. Six middle strings extend all the way down the outside of the racquet handle. Vibration is dampened by rubber at string contact points on the handle.

Dislikes: Although a good idea, the long strings and the hoped-for added power seem negated because the strings touch the top part of the handle, dampening the trampoline effect.

Price: $224. (800) 946-6060; www.wilson.com.

Gripping power

Ektelon DPR 2500 Lite:

Likes: Good, fast hits from the “double power ring” -- a plastic structure in the throat of the racket where all 16 vertical strings converge for maximum length. Tacky handle has good grip. Racquet cover has a zippered pocket and business card holder.

Dislikes: None

Price: $280. (800) 283-2635; www.ektelon.com.

Kill-shot comfort

Head LiquidMetal 170:

Likes: Very good power and comfort. Like the Ektelon, its 16 strings converge down into the throat of the racquet. The proprietary “LiquidMetal” frame material aids comfort and rebound. Strings are anchored to “power tubes” that use a polymer material that is said to add rebound and absorb shock. Mesh on the racquet cover allows handle to dry off.

Dislikes: None

Price: $275; (800) 289-7366; www.head.com.
