Police Arrest Senior Opposition Leaders
Senior Pakistani opposition figures were arrested to block a major rally for the husband of exiled former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto when he returned after visiting her, police said.
Thousands of activists from her Pakistan People’s Party also were detained, and hundreds of police blockaded Lahore’s airport. When Asif Ali Zardari arrived from Dubai, police took him to his home.
A senior police official said the detained party leaders included Secretary-General Jehangir Badar and Punjab province president Qasim Zia.
