Perfect Solution for Cats: Keep Them Inside

Share

Re “Treating Cats Like Dogs,” editorial, April 17: Of course there are more humane ways to deal with the stray situation than allowing the hunting and shooting of cats. We all are aware that there are some folks who’ll use this as an excuse to shoot any cat, domestic or not. And, some cats that resemble our neighbor’s pet could accidentally be harmed if this practice were allowed. As well, this would be just another avenue for the accidental shooting of a person.

Spaying or neutering our cats is the best way to curb the stray cat population. This practice also curbs the tendency for cats to wander. Here, in San Diego County, there are many people who will trap a feral cat and then take it to be spayed or neutered. This simple practice helps reduce the number of strays. There are also cat societies that will provide shelter for these spayed or neutered strays. My opinion is that pet cats should be kept indoors; if only for their own health and welfare.

I have an indoor-only cat that is content to sit by the window and just watch the birds. Besides myself, she has the companionship of two dogs and one house rabbit. Why people think that cats need to roam around outside unattended is beyond me. Would you let your 2-year-old child roam the streets?

Outdoor cats often become stray cats. They get lost, they get hurt, and if not spayed or neutered they add to the overpopulation problem. And now they may be hunted down and shot in Wisconsin. We need to keep our cats indoors, spay and neuter, vaccinate and, yes, maybe license them. It is a small thing to do for the companion animal you love and care for.
