Gay Foster Parents Deserve Our Thanks

Re “Texas Might Ban Gay Foster Parenting,” April 22: Love and compassion are too often in short supply. It saddens me to see that some Texas politicians, hiding behind the guise of “traditional families,” lack both.
Texas state Rep. Robert Talton, a Republican, asserts that most Texans share his concerns about placing “our most vulnerable children in less than ideal circumstances.” However, he sees nothing wrong in removing up to 3,000 children from homes in which many probably feel safe and loved.
Instead of lambasting gays for their sexual orientation, these Texas politicians should be complimenting these foster parents on their concern for children’s well-being. I respect and admire the people who take a child into their hearts and homes, and as a fellow parent and citizen, I thank them.
Of those 81 members of the Texas House who voted to approve this measure, I wonder how many have foster children in their homes?
