More Rain Expected Today in the Southland

From a Times Staff Writer

Rain should start falling across Los Angeles and Orange counties before dawn today, and continue off and on through this evening, National Weather Service forecasters said Wednesday.

Forecasters said there’s a chance of brief thundershowers, but precipitation should be light, with rainfall totals in the Los Angeles Basin reaching about three-quarters of an inch.

That would leave downtown Los Angeles about 2 inches short of the record for the season, which runs from July 1 through June 30. The record, set in 1883-84, is 38.18 inches.

As of Wednesday night, the total was 36.04, the second-highest on record.

But Los Angeles typically gets just a quarter-inch of rain between now and June 30. So the region is still in the race, but the odds against a new record get longer every day.

Partly cloudy skies should prevail through the weekend, with no additional rain in the forecast.

Mostly sunny skies are expected early next week. Moderate temperatures should continue for the next week or more, with highs in the 60s and 70s following overnight lows in the 40s and 50s.
