A roadside bomb exploded as a police convoy traveled down a rural highway in northern Colombia, killing at least 11 officers, President Alvaro Uribe said.

Uribe said reports from police commanders indicated the attack occurred near the mountain town of Patillal about 430 miles north of the capital, Bogota.

The president did not blame any insurgent group.

Word of the bloodshed came hours after more than 2,000 right-wing paramilitary fighters laid down their arms in return for amnesty, as their commander Diego Murillo, indicted on drug trafficking charges in the United States, stood by and watched.
