From Times Staff and Wire Reports

Orange County health authorities Wednesday issued a warning to people who may have been near a basketball court where residents found a California brown bat that subsequently tested positive for rabies.

The bat was discovered about 11:30 a.m. July 28 hanging on a fence of the court at the Newport Shores Community Complex, a recreational complex at Prospect Avenue and 62nd Street, police said. The animal was taken to a county laboratory, where it tested positive for rabies, a dangerous and infectious disease.

Authorities urge that anyone in the area July 27 or 28 who may have had contact with the bat call the county Health Care Agency at (714) 834-8180 or police at (949) 644-3717.
