From Times Staff and Wire Reports

Tuberculosis vaccines being tested in developed countries will not protect people living in parts of the developing world where they are most needed, researchers from University College London reported this week in the journal Nature Reviews Immunology.

They found that near the equator, the tuberculosis bacteria turned the body’s normal protective response into a harmful one. That explains why TB vaccines like BCG, or bacille Calmette-Guerin, are ineffective in some regions, they said.
