Dick Heyward, 90, who served as UNICEF’s senior deputy director for more than three decades, died Wednesday at North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset, N.Y.

As senior deputy director from 1949 to 1981, Heyward was considered the intellectual powerhouse behind much of UNICEF’s policy and programming during his years with the organization.

“He was a man of extraordinary dedication and drive, and he had a profound influence on UNICEF,” Ann M. Veneman, the organization’s executive director, said in a statement.

Heyward was born in Koonya, Australia, and was educated in Australia and at the London School of Economics. From 1947 to 1949, he was first secretary to the Australian Mission to the United Nations and served on the UNICEF board.

After his retirement, he continued to work for UNICEF, the World Health Organization and the World Bank. His activities were curtailed by a 1997 stroke.

He was the father of Andrew Heyward, the president of CBS News.
