Three Los Angeles Police Department vice officers fired at a shooting suspect Sunday who then returned fire before fleeing, a police spokeswoman said.

The plainclothes officers were patrolling the area around 59th and Figueroa streets about 4:45 p.m. when they saw a man allegedly shoot and wound another man, said Officer Sara Faden.

When the officers identified themselves, the gunman fired at them numerous times, Faden said.

The officers fired back, she said. No one was hit, and the suspect ran away.

The man who was shot by the suspect was wounded in the “lower extremities,” Faden said. He was taken to a nearby hospital.
