Judge Finds Gateway Violated 2 HP Patents

From Times Staff and Wire Reports

Gateway Inc. violated two patents held by larger PC maker Hewlett-Packard Co., a U.S. International Trade Commission judge said.

The judge decided that Irvine-based Gateway would not be able to import a “significant amount” of disputed desktops and server computers as well as some notebook PCs, Palo Alto-based Hewlett-Packard said.

The patents involve parallel ports that connect printers to PCs, which Gateway maintains are largely unused by consumers today because of new technology. If Gateway’s appeal fails, the company said, it could make its PCs compliant by February, when the ruling takes effect.
