Re “In Niger, Hunger Hits Crisis Level,” Aug. 5

The U.N.’s plea for help in November fell on deaf ears. At that time, international support may have averted the crisis millions of people in Niger, Mali, Mauritania and Burkina Faso are now facing. The U.N. will debate an emergency fund Sept. 14-16 at the World Summit. Oxfam, the aid agency, has proposed that the U.N. establish a $1-billion emergency fund to prevent future food crises. This fund is critical so that people around the world will no longer have to fear the threat of starvation that is plaguing West Africa. The U.S. government should join in supporting this important proposal.
