Downtown’s all about updates

Even more proof that downtown’s going uptown: Fred Eric is getting in the game. I bumped into the chef-restaurateur at Broadway Bar, a gem of a joint that neighbors the Orpheum Theatre at Broadway and 8th. Eric, who owns such cool spots as Vida and Fred 62, has his hands in three downtown ventures. In October, he’s opening Tiara in the New Mart building at 9th and Los Angeles. The market and restaurant will stock such delectables as imported chocolate and organic produce. He’s also teaming with the Camacho family (which owns a variety of Mexican restaurants throughout the Southland) to open Liberty, a swanky club and restaurant across from Staples Center at Flower and 11th. It’s slated for a January debut. In addition, expect Bar Tiara to pop up in Marc Smith’s upcoming downtown bar at 6th and Spring. Bar Tiara will be a sushi/sandwich joint inside Smith’s new bar (Smith co-owns the Golden Gopher).... Speaking of the Orpheum, the venue is offering a night of tease with Dita Von Teese on Aug. 20. The hot burlesque star is brewing “Ooh La L.A.,” which pays tribute to downtown’s burlesque past.
