Injured workers got the short end of the stick
Re “State Employers Reaping Benefits of Workers’ Comp Overhaul,” Aug. 9
Although there have been lower premiums for many employers in the workers’ compensation arena, the question is at what cost?
Everyone agreed that the system in California needed to be fixed. However, SB 899, while lowering premiums for employers, severely cut permanent disability benefits for legitimately injured workers, by as much as 65%. This happened despite the fact that the new law is supposed to follow the Rand Corp. study, which found existing benefits clearly inadequate!
Lower costs have become a priority, instead of adequately compensating injured workers. Legislative adjustments to this law can partially remedy the situation, but the Legislature must act immediately before too much damage is inflicted on the injured employees.
