The breadth of UCLA’s catalog
I am always glad to learn about alternative learning spaces in the community and found the article about Flor y Canto Centro Comunitario [“Built on a Theory of Revolution,” Aug. 11] very interesting. But Adam Bregman’s comment regarding “topics unlikely to be available in the UCLA catalog such as Puerto Rican independence or the liberation struggle in Tanzania” is gratuitous and false.
UCLA has one of the finest African studies programs in the nation. As a student in the master’s program there in the 1970s, I wrote a paper about the liberation struggle in Tanzania, and later as a visiting professor I taught East African history, including the anticolonial struggle in Tanzania. Regular courses also include “Africa in the Age of Imperialism,” which includes coverage of nationalist movements across the continent.
