The head of the U.N. elections unit has been charged with violating staff rules after accusations that she made unwanted advances toward a male employee and created a sexually charged workplace, the United Nations said.

The world body’s human resources office gave Carina Perelli, the highly praised Uruguayan director of the Electoral Assistance Division, a letter Aug. 4 setting out the charges, U.N. spokesman Stephane Dujarric said.

Perelli could face reprimand, dismissal or no action, depending on her response, he said.
