From Times Staff and Wire Reports

Rising gas prices could lead to an increase in taxi fares.

The city’s Board of Taxicab Commissioners is recommending that the City Council approve fare hikes that would amount to an increase of 10.2% for a 5-mile trip.

The board also is recommending a 50-cent surcharge when the average price of gas is $2.73 or more per gallon. And the board is backing a surcharge of an additional $1 when it is $3.28 or more per gallon.

The council is expected to take up the recommended fare increases Sept. 6.

The last increase was in 2001.
