From Times Wire Reports

Northwest Airlines mechanics walked the picket line for a second day, but the carrier flew without any major disruptions as it called in 1,500 replacement workers.

In the first U.S. airline strike since 2001, Aircraft Mechanics Fraternal Assn. workers walked off their jobs at Northwest on Friday after failing to reach a new contract.

The strike by the 4,400 mechanics and maintenance workers has not been joined by other unions at Northwest.

A spokeswoman for the airline said no further talks had been scheduled between the mechanics union and Northwest.
