‘Under’ finale not over the top

HBO’s “Six Feet Under” showed a little more of a ratings pulse with its much-talked-about series finale Sunday night. The 72-minute farewell to the Fisher mortuary clan dug up an average of 3.9 million viewers, according to figures released Tuesday by Nielsen Media Research.

The numbers gave a bittersweet sendoff to one of HBO’s signature shows. “Six Feet,” which captured the Emmy for best drama series in 2003, was averaging a paltry 2 million or so viewers earlier this season, its fifth on the pay cable network. “Six Feet” still didn’t quite recapture its popularity of three years ago, though, when it averaged 5.6 million.

For the record:

“Six Feet Under” -- A Quick Takes item in Wednesday’s Calendar section said HBO’s “Six Feet Under” won the Emmy for best drama series in 2003. In fact, “The West Wing” won that award. “Six Feet Under” has never won an Emmy in that category.

The “Six Feet” finale fell well short of some HBO milestones. The February 2004 finale of “Sex and the City,” for example, averaged 10.6 million viewers. But “Six Feet” did help the show that followed it Sunday, “Entourage,” which got its largest audience ever with 2.7 million viewers.
